Connecting Central Queensland to global agricultural innovation.

CattleLab collaborates with national and international agritech companies, research institutions, and industry partners to develop industry-led projects that improve supply chains, commercialise new technologies, and create long-term value for the cattle sector.

CattleLab is a Central Queensland initiative advancing agricultural innovation, livestock research, and next-generation meat processing technologies.

Central Queensland is one of Australia’s most significant cattle-producing regions and a cornerstone of the national beef industry. CattleLab builds on this strong agricultural foundation by integrating advanced manufacturing, digital technologies, and applied research to support producers, improve productivity, and develop export-ready technologies.

A Central Queensland Innovation Platform

Operating within the Strategic Industries Alliance network, CattleLab serves as a regional innovation platform focused on technologies for cattle production, meat processing, and agricultural infrastructure.

The initiative translates research and engineering into practical tools, equipment, and systems that can be deployed across Australia’s grazing and meat processing sectors.

Through collaboration with producers, universities, agritech companies, and manufacturing partners, CattleLab aims to:

  • Enhance livestock productivity and animal welfare
  • Improve supply chain efficiency and traceability
  • Develop automation and digital technologies for meat processing
  • Support regional manufacturing of agricultural technologies
  • Strengthen Central Queensland’s role in global beef markets

Key Areas of Focus

Livestock Research & Precision Agriculture

CattleLab supports research and development into technologies that improve livestock management and production efficiency across large-scale grazing operations.

Key technologies include:

  • Precision livestock monitoring using sensors, drones, and data platforms
  • Nutritional and feed optimisation technologies
  • Genetic improvement and herd management tools
  • Remote monitoring systems for large grazing properties
  • Environmental monitoring and pasture management technologies

These innovations help producers increase productivity while managing the challenges of drought, climate variability, and large geographic operating environments.

Meat Processing Innovation

Central Queensland is home to major meat processing facilities that play an essential role in regional employment and export markets.

CattleLab supports innovation to modernise and strengthen this sector through:

  • Automation and robotics in abattoir operations
  • AI-enabled quality control and carcass assessment systems
  • Improved cold-chain logistics and supply chain traceability
  • Processing efficiency and productivity technologies
  • Development of new value-added processing systems

These technologies aim to strengthen regional processing capacity and improve Australia’s global competitiveness in beef exports.

Agritech Engineering & Equipment Development

CattleLab supports the development and local manufacturing of agricultural equipment designed for northern Australian cattle operations.

Areas of development include:

  • Drone-based mustering and livestock monitoring systems
  • Remote water and pasture monitoring technologies
  • Autonomous agricultural vehicles and robotics
  • Modular livestock handling and yard systems
  • Smart fencing and advanced grazing management systems

Many of these technologies can be designed and manufactured locally through collaboration with ManufacturingHQ and other Strategic Industries divisions, strengthening Central Queensland’s engineering and fabrication sector.

Bioenergy & Agricultural By-Products

CattleLab will explore opportunities to convert agricultural waste streams and livestock by-products into energy and new commercial products.

Potential initiatives include:

  • Biofuel production from agricultural residues
  • Waste-to-energy systems for regional processing facilities
  • Biomaterials and bio-based industrial inputs
  • Sustainable fertiliser and soil enhancement technologies

These initiatives support the development of circular agricultural economies and sustainable regional energy systems.

Workforce Development & Skills

Developing regional capability is a core objective of CattleLab.

The initiative supports workforce development through:

  • Training programs in agritech, livestock technology, and agricultural engineering
  • Collaboration with universities and technical training institutions
  • Industry placements and applied research programs
  • Skills development for advanced agricultural manufacturing

By combining agriculture with engineering, robotics, and digital technologies, CattleLab creates new career pathways for regional communities.

Global Collaboration

CattleLab operates within the international network of Strategic Industries Alliance partnerships, enabling collaboration with leading organisations across the agricultural technology sector.

These partnerships include:

  • International agritech companies
  • Research universities and innovation laboratories
  • Global meat processing and supply chain partners
  • Advanced manufacturing and robotics firms

Through these collaborations, Central Queensland producers gain access to cutting-edge technologies while locally developed innovations can be introduced to international markets.

Strategic Impact

CattleLab positions Central Queensland as a leading centre for cattle industry innovation.

The initiative will:

  • Strengthen productivity and resilience across regional cattle operations
  • Support development of new agricultural technologies
  • Enhance meat processing efficiency and export capability
  • Create high-value jobs in agritech, engineering, and advanced manufacturing
  • Connect regional producers with global research and technology networks

By bringing together agriculture, engineering, and advanced manufacturing, CattleLab represents a new model for regional innovation—transforming Central Queensland’s cattle industry into a platform for technology development and international collaboration.
