Our sustainability

Turning mining expertise into next-generation industrial capability.

MineFutures leverages Central Queensland’s mining experience, engineering skills, and manufacturing capability to develop dual-use technologies that support both industrial and defence applications.

MineFutures – Mining Transformation & Industrial Capability

MineFutures is a Central Queensland initiative transforming mining heritage into advanced industrial capability.

Operating within the Strategic Industries Alliance network, MineFutures connects engineers, manufacturers, researchers, and industry partners to repurpose mining expertise, infrastructure, and landscapes for new industrial, research, and technology development opportunities.

Central Queensland has a long history as one of Australia’s most important mining regions. Generations of workers, engineers, and businesses have built deep capability in mining operations, heavy engineering, explosives handling, and large-scale industrial systems.

MineFutures builds on this foundation by converting mining knowledge and infrastructure into new platforms for research, testing, manufacturing, and dual-use industrial technologies.

A Central Queensland Innovation Platform

The initiative focuses on converting mining assets, engineering expertise, and regional industrial infrastructure into environments where new technologies can be developed, tested, and deployed.

Through collaboration with mining companies, manufacturers, defence organisations, universities, and research institutions, MineFutures aims to:

  • Repurpose mining infrastructure for research and technology development
  • Support engineering innovation in mining and explosives technologies
  • Strengthen regional manufacturing and fabrication capability
  • Enable safe testing environments for industrial and dual-use technologies
  • Connect Central Queensland with global mining and defence innovation networks

Key Areas of Focus

Mine-to-Mission Industrial Transformation

MineFutures explores opportunities to convert former mining sites and infrastructure into platforms for industrial innovation and technology development.

These environments provide unique conditions for:

  • Technology testing and industrial experimentation
  • Research and development of heavy industrial systems
  • Development of dual-use technologies
  • Large-scale engineering projects

This approach enables mining heritage to support the next generation of industrial capability.

Explosives Research & Testing Infrastructure

Central Queensland has long-standing expertise in explosives handling and blasting operations used across the mining sector.

MineFutures seeks to develop infrastructure that supports:

  • Research and testing of explosives technologies
  • Development of safer blasting techniques and technologies
  • Industrial explosives engineering
  • Collaboration with defence and research organisations

These facilities can support innovation across both mining and defence sectors.

Advanced Engineering & Manufacturing Capability

A core objective of MineFutures is to strengthen local engineering and fabrication capability.

Mining operations have historically required highly skilled engineers, machinists, welders, and fabricators. MineFutures builds on this expertise by supporting the development of:

  • Precision engineered industrial systems
  • Advanced fabrication and welding technologies
  • Industrial equipment prototyping and testing
  • Components and infrastructure for heavy industry

By linking mining expertise with advanced manufacturing, MineFutures helps expand the regional industrial base.

Dual-Use Industrial Technologies

Many technologies developed in heavy industry environments have applications across multiple sectors.

MineFutures supports the development of dual-use technologies including:

  • Industrial explosives systems
  • Remote and autonomous mining technologies
  • Heavy engineering and infrastructure systems
  • Environmental monitoring and safety technologies

These technologies can support mining, infrastructure development, defence applications, and broader industrial innovation.

Workforce Development & Skills

MineFutures also supports workforce development by building on the strong technical skills already present in Central Queensland’s mining communities.

The initiative supports:

  • Skills development in advanced engineering and manufacturing
  • Training in industrial systems and heavy engineering
  • Collaboration with universities and technical training institutions
  • Industry placements and applied research programs

By expanding engineering and manufacturing capability, MineFutures creates new opportunities for regional workers and industries.

Global Collaboration

MineFutures operates within the international partnership network of Strategic Industries Alliance.

Through these partnerships, MineFutures connects regional engineering capability with global mining innovation and industrial research.

Collaborations may include:

  • International mining technology companies
  • Research universities and engineering institutes
  • Defence and industrial research organisations
  • Advanced manufacturing and engineering firms

These relationships allow Central Queensland to participate in the development of globally relevant industrial technologies.

Strategic Impact

MineFutures positions Central Queensland as a centre for mining transformation

and industrial innovation.

The initiative will:

  • Repurpose mining heritage into new industrial capability
  • Strengthen regional engineering and manufacturing expertise
  • Support innovation in explosives technologies and heavy industry systems
  • Create new high-value jobs in engineering and advanced manufacturing
  • Connect regional industry with global mining and industrial technology networks

By combining mining expertise, advanced engineering, and manufacturing capability, MineFutures demonstrates how regional industrial heritage can be transformed into a platform for future innovation and technology development.
